The main attractions of the city are located between the two castles. The Iglesia de Santa Maria church is not far from the Santa Barbara castle. The church was built in the Gothic style on the place where a Muslim mosque used to be, in honour of the victory over the Moors. Subsequently, the main altar and the portal were rebuilt in Baroque style. They can be seen today. Moreover, the Church has beautiful paintings. Museo de Arte del Siglo XX - Museo de la Asegurada - is in the area of Plaza de Santa Maria. The museum has assembled a very interesting collection of paintings of the 20th century: works of Kandinsky, Braque, Ernst, Chagall, Picasso, Giacometti, Grisa, Miro, as well as the works of Spanish artists of the 50s generation: Alfaro, Canogar, Mompo, Saura, Tapies, Sabel, Viola.
La Catedral San Nicolas de Bari is outside Ayuntamiento, on a parallel street. It was built in 1662, in honour to the patron Alicante - San Nicolas de Bari, and is considered to be one of the most important historical monuments of the city. After the 1936-39 civil war, the Cathedral has been restored. The facade of the cathedral is a work of Juan de Herrera, the architect who designed the famous Escorial monastery, near Madrid. Inside the cathedral there is a beautiful gilded altar, surrounded by openwork bars, as well as the altar in style "churrigera" (Spanish Baroque in the early 18.). Neighborhood El barrio de Santa Cruz - (located next to the cathedral), is the only preserved virtually intact, the Mauritanian part of the old city, where the Moors lived after the victory. Museo Arqueologico Provincial (Archaeological Museum) - Palacio de la Diputacion. Among the exhibits are: ceramics and household items of Moors and others who left their mark in the history of Alicante.
La Rambia de Mendez Nunes - the "heart" of Alicante. On this street go all the official parades and processions, religious and festive parades. La Rambia starts in the city centre, near the market, and ends at the embankment near Paseo Maritimo and Explanada de Espana.
Paseo Maritimo is a favorite place of walks of townspeople and tourists. At Paseo Maritimo with its marvelous palm lane there are many shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Alley, paved with scarlet, beige and white marble bricks gives the impression of isolated islands in the quiet bustle of the town.
